A guerra foi o principal conflito militar descrito nos três primeiros romances da série ''[[A Canção de Fogo e Gelo]]'', e seus resultados e conflitos consequentes continuam nos dois últimos livros. Segundo o Arquimeistre [[Benedict]], o nome do conflito é incorreto, porque Renly foi morto antes de Balon ter coroado a si mesmo, então, tecnicamente, nunca houve cinco reis ao mesmo tempo.{{ref|aFfC|1}}

15 anos antes do início da guerra, a [[Casa Baratheon]] liderou uma [[Rebelião de Robert|rebelião popular]], tendo deposto com sucesso o Rei Louco, [[Aerys II Targaryen]].
