Lord Mathis Rowan of Goldengrove is the head of House Rowan. He is married to Bethany Redwyne and has three children by her. He is stout and florid. He is clean-shaven. According to Ser Kevan Lannister, he is "sensible, prudent and well liked."

A Game of Thrones

Lord Mathis found Dareon in bed with his daughter. She was two years older than him and he claimed it was consensual, however under the eyes of her father, she claimed rape and Dareon was sent to the Wall.

A Clash of Kings

On the outset of the War of the Five Kings, Mathis Rowan joins his liege lord Mace Tyrell in declaring for King Renly and had marches with his army to Bitterbridge, where he encounters Catelyn Tully. After the parley with Stannis I beneath the walls of Storm's End, Lord Mathis attempts to convince Renly to leave him to lead a siege and go on to take King's Landing. His opinion was overruled and he was instead placed in command of the center in the coming battle with Stannis' forces. Before the battle could take place, Renly was assassinated. Mathis Rowan was among the lords who, like Lord Tyrell, did not join with Stannis. He was one of the leaders of the Reachmen that joins with Lord Tywin Lannister at the headwaters of the Blackwater Rush, marching alongside him until Tumbler's Falls where Mace Tyrell waited with an even larger force. They embarked on barges and sailed to just outside King's Landing where they took Stannis's army in the rear. After the battle was done, Lord Rowan was made a member-without-portfolio of the small council.

As a guest at the King Joffrey I's wedding, he gave the king a red silk tourney pavilion as a wedding gift.

A Feast for Crows

After the death of the Hand of the King, Tywin Lannister, Ser Kevan Lannister mentions Lord Mathis as a possibility to fill the vacant position. Instead, Cersei chooses the tractable Ser Harys Swyft, and removes Mathis from the council. Lord Mathis rides with Lord Mace Tyrell to besiege Storm's End, still held by Stannis's men. When Lord Tyrell hears that his daughter has been arrested by the High Sparrow, he returns to the capitol and leaves Lord Rowan in command of the siege.

A Dança dos Dragões
