Recent Events
A Storm of Swords
Lady Olenna came to King's Landing to attend the wedding of her granddaughter, Margaery Tyrell, to King Joffrey I. During a supper with Margaery and a number of noble ladies of houses sworn to the Tyrells, Olenna sharply questions Sansa Stark about Joffrey's nature. She refused to listen to Sansa's evasions and half truths about Joffrey and got Sansa to speak the truth about Joffrey's cruelty and the beatings he gave her. To prevent any potential spy from listening to Sansa, Lady Olenna ordered her jester, Butterbumps, to sing loudly.[1]
Olenna plotted to marry Sansa Stark to her grandson Willas, but the plot was foiled by Littlefinger before it could come to fruition, who informed Lord Tywin, who quickly married Sansa to his son, Tyrion Lannister. Olenna is present at the wedding feast when Joffrey dies from drinking poisoned wine. [2]
Littlefinger implies to Sansa Stark that Olenna is the one who poisoned King Joffrey at his wedding, with some help from himself and his co-conspirators. If so it is also feasible that her granddaughter Margaery knew of the plot due to the fact both she and Joffrey drank from the same wedding cup, so it stands to reason Margaery would have known when not to drink from the cup as Olenna would not risk poisoning her own granddaughter whom she loved. It is very unlikely that Mace Tyrell knew of the plot as Olenna frequently refers to her son as an "oaf."
Olenna most likely poisoned Joffrey to spare her granddaughter Margaery from the same cruelty the boy showed Sansa Stark. According to Littefinger, Olenna knew Mace dreamed of his daughter Margaery becoming Queen and for that they needed a king, but they did not need Joffrey.
A Feast for Crows
Lady Olenna attends the funeral of Lord Tywin Lannister with her family.[3] After Margaery was wed to King Tommen, Olenna returned to Highgarden with her grandson, Ser Garlan Tyrell. Varys tells Cersei Lannister later that Olenna keeps a large chest of gold from before the Conquest in her wheelhouse. In the event that unwary tradespeople offend her, she pays them in the old gold coins of the Reach, which are only half the weight of newly minted gold dragons.[4]
Following the escape of Tyrion Lannister from his imprisonment, one such coin was found in the quarters of an undergaoler named Rugen (an alias of Varys), seemingly implicating the Tyrells in the escape of Tyrion and in the ultimate assassination of Lord Tywin.
