Mance Rayder

Mance Rayder foi um homem da Patrulha da Noite até que quebrou seus votos e abandonou seu posto. Desde então, tem se tornado extremamente influente entre os selvagens, e é chamado de "Rei Para Lá da Muralha."

Aparência e Personalidade

Mance é um homem grande, de pernas longas e magro, com peito e ombros largos. Seus cabelos já foram castanhos, porém hoje, em sua maior parte, estão grisalhos; linhas marcam seu rosto no canto de sua boca quando ri. Ele tem um rosto afilado e sagazes olhos castanhos. É, enfim, um home de meia idade de aparência comum, com um grande gosto por música.

História

Mance foi uma criança selvagem, tomada pela Patrulha da Noite e criado como um deles. Foi um membro leal was da Patrulha por grande parte de sua vida, até que foi ferido enquanto patrulhava, e foi curado por uma mulher selvagem. Enquanto se recuperava, ela emendou sua capa resgada com pedaços de tecido vermelho. Em seu retorno à Muralha, os comandantes o fizeram trocar sua capa remendada por uma das capas negras. Esta violação a sua liberdade o fez abandonar a Patrulha da Noite e ir viver com os selvagens, do jeito que quisesse.

Eventos Recentes

A Guerra dos Tronos

É revelado que quando Robert Baratheon foi a Winterfell para visitar seu velho amigo Eddard Stark, Mance estava presente no evento. Através de fontes na Patrulha da Noite, Mance ficou sabendo da visita do Rei ao Norte; inspirado pela lenda de Bael o Bardo, decidiu participar das festividades. Ele escalou a Muralha e viajou até Winterfell.

Sua presença não foi reconhecida por Ned, nem por seu irmão Benjen, que nunca o haviam encontrado, apesar do último já ser membro há alguns anos da Patrulha da Noite. Sob o disfarce de um músico, Mance tocou alaúde no banquete.

A Tormenta de Espadas

Mance assumiu a monumental tarefa de unir os notoriamente individualistas selvagens sob sua direção para invadir os Sete Reinos; reuniram-se nos Colmilhos de Gelo. Ao ouvir rumores do abandono de aldeias e da organização dos selvagens por Mance Rayder, o Rei-Para-Lá-da-Muralha, a Patrulha da Noite organizou uma grande expedição para enfrentá-los.

Quando Jon Snow encontrou Mance sob o pretexto de se juntar a sua causa, Mance o explicou que ele havia tomado posse de um corno mágico conhecido como Corno do Inverno, que supostamente faria tombar a Muralha, e a usaria como último recurso se ele não conseguisse superar a Patrulha militarmente. Mance, entretanto, revelou que os selvagens, incluindo seu próprio povo, tem sido caçados pelos Outros e suas criaturas, e tem sido incapazes de detê-los. Seu principal objetivo, por conseguinte, não seria destruir a Muralha, mas usá-la como um escudo contra os Outros.

Mance comandou a invasão da Muralha enquanto esta estava protegida por uma guarnição raquítica, comandada por Jon Snow. Apesar de todas as adversidades, Jon conseguiu deter o avanço das forças de Mance por tempo suficiente até os inesperados reforços comandados por Stannis Baratheon chegarem e destruírem o desorganizado exércido selvagem.

Jon smuggled Mance's son away from the Wall in the care of Samwell Tarly because he knew that Stannis's sorceress Melisandre was looking to sacrifice a child of royal blood, and that Mance's title of "King-Beyond-the-Wall" could be construed as a royal lineage.

A Dance dos Dragões

Mance is supposedly burned alive by Stannis with the wildlings, members of the Night's Watch, King's Men, and Queen's Men there to bare witness. Jon Snow orders him killed by archers of the Watch during the burning to give him a quick death.

In actuality the man killed was Rattleshirt, who was glamored by Melisandre's magic to appear like Mance. Meanwhile, the actual Mance is is glamored by a ruby worn at his wrist to appear as Rattleshirt. No one bar Mance and Melisandre knew the truth of the deception. Melisandre kept the secret from Stannis due to Stannis's strict code of following the law. "Rattleshirt" even sparred with Jon Snow in the yard and Jon was shocked by the man's speed and skill, not knowing it was actually Mance.

Later when word reached the Muralha that Arya Stark (it was unknown the girl was actually Jeyne Poole) was to wed Ramsay Snow, Melisandre offered to send Rattleshirt to retrieve her, but Jon refused, not trusting Rattleshirt. Therefore, Melisandre revealed Mance's disguise in order to make Jon reconsider the offer. Jon held Mance's son (it was unknown to both Melisandre and Mance that Jon had switched Mance's baby with Craster's) so Mance would do everything in his power to rescue Jon's sister for the sake of his son.

Mance took six wildling spearwives with him - Rowan, Holly, Squirrel, Willow Witch-eye, Frenya and Myrtle. He arrived at Winterfell as a bard under the assumed name "Abel" (an anagram for "Bael" from the "Bael o Bardo" legend) and claimed the women were camp followers and relatives to him. Mance performed songs throughout the wedding and subsequent feast at Winterfell, while during the night his wildling spearwives killed several Bolton men at arms (suspicion was cast on Theon Greyjoy at first, then Manderly knights) causing tension in the castle between the Bolton, Frey and northern houses. They also got the help of a reluctant and fearful Theon Greyjoy to help them free "Arya", even though he knew it was really Jeyne Poole. Tensions exploded in the castle when Little Walder Frey was murdered (though the spearwives claimed to Theon that his death was not their doing). Disguised as bedmaids bringing water for Arya's bath, the six women and Greyjoy entered her bedchamber and there Squirrel stripped out of her clothes and they disguised the terrified Jeyne as a bedmaid to sneak her out (Squirrel would remain in the room and escape by climbing down the tower).

The ploy was a success until Jeyne gives their position away by screaming, and Theon and Jeyne are forced to jump from Winterfell's battlements to the snow below. It was reported in a letter Ramsay Bolton sent Jon that Mance has been captured and thrown in a cage which is exposed to the elements and that the six spearwives that came with him had been killed and skinned. Mance is being forced to use their sewed-together skins in the cage, as it is his only source of warmth.
