A Dança dos Dragões foi uma guerra civil ocorrida durante a Dinastia Targaryen. Consistiu em uma guerra de sucessão entre Aegon II e Rhaenyra sobre o direito ao Trono de Ferro deixado por seu pai, Viserys I. Durante a guerra, ambos os monarcas morreram, de modo que o trono foi herdado por Aegon III, filho de Rhaenyra.
No início de 2013, foi anunciado que a antologia Dangerous Women, que antes esperava-se que incluiria o quarto conto de Dunk e Egg, irá, ao invés disso, incluir um conto de George R. R. Martin chamado The Princess and the Queen, o qual ele descreveu como "a história verdadeira (pelo menos a maior parte dela) das origens da Dança dos Dragões". [1]
Antecedentes
O Rei Viserys I teve três filhos com sua primeira rainha da Casa Arryn, mas apenas uma criança sobreviveu até chegar à idade adulta, a Princesa Rhaenyra. Sem um filho homem para sucedê-lo, Viserys começou a instruir a Princesa Rhaenyra para que ela fosse sua herdeira. A jovem Rhaenyra
King Viserys I had three children by his first queen of House Arryn, but only one, Princess Rhaenyra, survived to adulthood. Lacking a son to succeed him, Viserys began to train Princess Rhaenyra to be his heir. Young Rhaenyra was included in discussions of the affairs of state, and was allowed to participate in meetings of the small council. Many of the nobles took note, and Rhaenyra soon acquired a clique of adherents and supporters. However, after his queen died, the king remarried in 106AL, this time to Alicent Hightower and had four more children, including three sons, the eldest son named Aegon. Nonetheless, Rhaenyra's strengthened her place in the succession; she married Ser Laenor Velaryon - who himself had Targaryen blood - in her first marriage. She gave birth to three sons during her marriage, although there are rumours that the father of these boys was not Ser Laenor, but Rhaenyra's lover Ser Harwin Strong. When Laenor Velaryon passed away Rhaenyra married anew, this time her own uncle, Prince Daemon Targaryen, younger brother to Viserys I. Her sons by him are the future Aegon III (called Aegon the Younger in his youth) and Viserys II. Her father's intention that she should follow him on the Iron Throne was confirmed by proclamation and the will of Viserys I. In 105AL, hundreds of Lords and landed knights had done obeisance to the Princess Rhaenyra. In 111 AL, a great tourney was held at King’s Landing on the fifth anniversary of the king’s marriage to Queen Alicent. At the opening feast, the queen wore a green gown, whilst the Princess Rhaenyra dressed dramatically in Targaryen red and black. Note was taken, and thereafter it became the custom to refer to “greens” and “blacks” when talking of the queen’s party and the party of the princess, respectively. In the tourney itself, the blacks had much the better of it when Ser Criston Cole, wearing Princess Rhaenyra’s favor, unhorsed all of the Queen’s champions, including two of her cousins and her youngest brother, Ser Gwayne Hightower. Guerra
Após a morte do Rei Viserys em 129 d.C., o Senhor Comandante da Guarda Real, Sor Criston Cole, mais tarde chamado de "o Fazedor de Reis", contrariou a vontade do Rei e coroou Príncipe Aegon como Aegon II. Os motivos de Sor Criston para cometer tal ato nunca ficaram claros, mas comentava-se que ele e Rhaenyra eram amantes, e sua relação terminara mal, dando um lado pessoal para o conflito. Ele, também, podia simplesmente encorajar a tradição ândala, na qual o herdeiro é o filho mais velho.
De qualquer forma, muitos dos senhores dos reinos sabiam do desejo de Viserys de Rhaenyra sucedê-lo como a primeira Rainha Reinante de Westeros, e apoiaram a Princesa. Sem dúvida, a maioria deles eram os bajuladores que a haviam cortejado por anos enquanto ela se preparava para ser rainha. Entre os maiores apoiadores de Rhaenyra estava a Casa Strong de Harrenhal.
Rhaenyra foi contra a pretensão de Aegon, e isto resultou em uma sangrenta guerra civil. O reino foi dividido pela metade. Até a própria Guarda Real escolheu diferentes causas, exemplificado quando os irmãos Sor Arryk e Sor Erryk mataram um ao outro. [2] Targaryen lutou contra Targaryen, dragão contra dragão, onde muitos ramos menores da Casa Targaryen e a maioria dos dragões morreram, [3] entre eles os três filhos de Rhaenyra com Lorde Lyonel, que morreram lutando.
Sob circunstâncias desconhecidas, Rhaenyra veio a ser condenada à morte como traidora por seu irmão Aegon II, que a fez ser comida por seu dragão enquanto seu filho assistia. Entretanto, seus seguidores passaram a apoiar o filho dela, chamando-o de Aegon III. O sangrento conflito terminou em 131 d.C., com a morte de Aegon II e a ascensão de Aegon III ao trono. Isso ocorreu como um acordo entre as duas facções, ou porque Aegon II não tinha herdeiros.
Consequências
A Casa Targaryen saiu enfraquecida da guerra. Desde então, passou a adotar uma versão extrema da tradição Ândala, colocando as herdeiras atrás de todos os possíveis herdeiros, mesmo as de diferentes relações. Veja também: Daena Targaryen, Daeron II. A guerra é o tema da canção A Dança dos Dragões.
